How to identify the 'work from home opportunity' to suit your needs

There are lots of jobs you could do from home. Make sure you choose the best, says Jen Powers.

There are many reasons why people turn to work from home opportunities. Some are forced into it when they are made redundant and can't find work, some are just totally frustrated working for others, and some have no choice due to family commitments or disability.

Whatever the reason, once the decision has been made, you start by searching on the web using phrases such as "home based business", " home working opportunities", "work from home opportunity", and then get excited and overwhelmed by the lists of opportunities presented to you.

Having reached this stage people generally start going through the lists spending money signing up to home working opportunities promising a great income for little effort. It is when they get to the one which requires a sign up fee of £99.95, an extra phone line, monthly purchases of 8 cases a month and wants you to sell to your friends, they stop and start to think more about the opportunities online.

While you could spend days going through the lists of home working opportunities clicking on links to see what is on offer, here are some things to consider which can help make the narrowing-down process a little easier.

The first thing to consider is how much money, if any, you are willing to invest in a work from home opportunity. Many opportunities do not refund your money if you decide the opportunity is not for you. Money you send may not be going to a legitimate business so check the opportunity offers contact information and send an email with a general question to see if there is someone actively involved. You can also do some research on the web to see if there are any scam reports about the opportunity.

Think about how much time you are willing or able to dedicate to your home business. Is this just going to be a few hours a week to get some extra income, or are you looking for something equivalent to a full-time job. If you only have a few hours to spare each week you really need to sign up to one opportunity to start with but may wish to start several if looking for the equivalent of a full-time income.

Also important to consider is what type of work from home opportunity would best suit your skills and personality. If you are a people person you may do quiet well in sales or home party jobs. If you prefer to work on your own you may be better suited to Internet marketing, article writing, or proof reading.

Some of the best legitimate opportunities online offer training and you will be more successful with your business if you follow these training courses. Whatever you decide you do need to be patient and persistent to grow an opportunity from home.

Next, think about what type of home working opportunities your home environment and working space is best equipped for. Do you have a dedicated work area with a reasonably fast PC, printer, and high-speed Internet connection? If you don't are you willing to spend money on this. Generally less technology means a more face-to-face business opportunity will be more of a success.

Something else you may wish to consider is whether you're looking for your own home based business or to work for a local company which allows telecommuting. Companies, which allow telecommuting, are likely to offer a benefits package, a better sense of security, and are highly unlikely to be fraudulent.

Finding the work from home opportunity that is right for you is well worth spending time and effort on. Consider each opportunity you find carefully, the more time and consideration you invest in your decision, the more likely you are to be successful.
