Home Business Profile: Psycademy
Your name:
Dr. Lisa Turner
Location:
Alton, Hampshire
Company name:
Psycademy
What does your company do?
We have a range programmes, both on and offline, groups and individual programmes that all enable people to take control of their life, release past trauma, recover from abusive relationships, and develop their spirituality and intuition.
Uniquely our spiritual and intuition training has a scientific basis (well I do have a PhD in engineering). I’ve taken all the fluff out. You won’t be sitting on a cushion meditating on a purple stone and hope it changes your life, just grounded, practical, techniques that work.
When did you start it?
April 2004
What were you doing before you started your home business?
I was a senior Lecturer in Automotive Engineering, and I am very proud of my PhD in engineering.
I get very irritated with the utter rubbish and pseudo science touted by untrained people in the personal development industry. Where there IS evidence I’ll use it, where there is none, I am very clear about that too with my clients.
I’ll say something like “there is no accepted scientific theory about this but it seems to work about 95% of the time.”
What made you make the switch?
I got made redundant and when I felt relief rather than panic I knew that it was finally time to take the plunge and do this full time. I had been working in this area for over three years after hours prior to doing this full time. I was a senior lecturer in engineering by day, and a coach, and therapist in the evenings. It was like leading two lives, and I kept wondering when some-one would notice that I wasn’t a “real engineer” even though I knew I was good at that, I knew my real passion was elsewhere. Being made redundant simply meant I could now focus on doing what I really loved, and I just wished I’d done it sooner.
What made you think of this idea?
I think that when you really know what you’re “meant” to be doing, what your unique gift is that it’s not really an idea that you decide to act on. Rather it was something I’d been doing all my life, and I simply decide to make it my main source of income, rather than a hobby that I yearned to do whilst pretending to be an engineer.
How many people work in the business?
I’m the only full time employee. And I have a close relationship with my various “virtual” support team members who include my personal assistant, and e-commerce manager.
What’s its annual income?
£70k pa
How do you market the business?
Networking, online and offline social media, and via the web. I do a lot of blogging and article writing.
What is your customer base?
I have two main customer groups:
1. Entrepreneurs and solo professionals who have hit a wall or block that they can’t seem to transcend, or they want to learn to be more intuitive, as this helps them make good decisions in a world of information overload.
2. Coaches, healers, therapists, and other practitioners who want to introduce practical spiritual technique into their work. We offer a benchmark standard certification for spiritual practitioners that is totally unique in this industry.
What’s next? What plans do you have for the coming year?
I am about to launch an online mastermind programme packed with resources for ongoing transformation and will include a monthly mastermind teleclass. I’m really excited about it as it will keep people on track, motivated and inspired without the expense of 1-1 meetings.
What is you most useful item:
Apart from my pc, which I couldn’t run my by business without, I’d have to say it’s my wireless telephone headset. It allows me to conduct my teleseminars and coaching calls hands free and not get a sore neck and shoulder.
Best home worker tip:
Learn marketing and sales. It’s simply not enough to be brilliant at what you do, you have to be fearless about selling yourself and learn the skills to do it.
